Gift’s Minamoto Chizuru (NSFW)

Today a look at Gift’s July 2010 release of Minamoto Chizuru from Kanokon. I’ve always loved her character design, and am a huge sucker for large scale figures so this was a pretty much instant pre-order. Gift isn’t kidding about 1/4 scale at all, clocking in at 40 cm she certainly lives up to the claim.

There aren’t any bells and whistles with this figure. She comes as is, the only seperate pieces packed along with her are a white plastic base and a metal stand with a plastic clamp to help hold her up. From her size and weight the extra lean support is definitely a good call.

Let’s go over the good points of Chizuru first – there’s a lot going on here that’s appealing. Her expression is vivid and animated, it really brings a lot of pop to her appearance and it genuinely resembles the character.

The stockings are actual fishnet which has a nice feel and makes it stand out against the PVC of the figure proper. Her red heels look like something straight out of the Wizard of Oz. Deep ruby red to match her leotard with flecks of gold that shine under light.

On the ecchi sellings points, there are many. The best sculpted parts here are her chest and her posterior. Or to be blunt – “OMG TITS” and “DAT ASS”. Her breasts themselves look great. The stick-on hearts are cute and bulge appropriately as opposed to being flat to her skin. Overall well proportioned and serve as a focal point from the front.

Her backside is equally well sculpted. The fishnets contrast her skin tone, and the way the fishnets pull into the joints of the figure around the leotard gives some extra sense of volume and curves. The pose itself highlights all these features and accentuates her legs nicely. Queue some ZZ Top.

The paint used for the hair, skin-tone, and facial features all match in quality and style. No real complaints there. The leotard itself though is an overly shiny texture that reflects light and you lose most of the few sculpt details present by this. The bunny ears and tail are equally questionable. Paint is basically non-existent here, it looks like flat white PVC that was simply shaped and tacked on. I know white is a difficult color to show detail on, and sculpt details are certainly there on both. Bumps along the surface of the tail try to make it look like a puffy piece of cotton, but without any shading to show it off it comes off looking like a craggy ball hanging on to her ass. Maybe shading made it look too much like a golf-ball and they cut their losses. It seems like changes to its size, shape, and texture could have helped it match the rest of the figure better.

The sculpt itself is pretty good overall. The hair, chest, and butt all look very nice. Her hands and the folds of her leotard however are really not up to speed with the rest of it. The hands look comically chubby and out of place compared to the rest of her. Her stubby fingers all have similar size and shape. The folds that can be seen of the interior of the leotard just look wrong. The edge where the fabric is rolling over itself glares against her skin-tone and looks too thick to be the same skin tight fabric the rest of the leotard appears to be.

Mine also arrived with a few manufacturing flaws. There are some noticable spots in her hair that reflect light and look like white specs of dust. On closer inspection they were chips where the unfinished PVC is exposed. Up close the color matches the hair, but they’re like tiny mirrors under light.

Her fishnets also arrived with a tear in them, unfortunately right in the front of her leg.

Not much to be done about it, these two issues may be one-offs that I just got unlucky with but can only speak to what I’ve seen myself.

The stand is nice – it’s going to help to support the pose she has, hopefully it will prevent leaning. Unfortunately the metal and white clamp clash with the rest of the figure. The placement of it also is right in your field of view from the prime display angles. As that’s the direction her weight is leaning there isn’t much choice on alternate placement but it’s less than ideal.

Summary: Gift’s Chizuru is a cute figure. It hits a lot of great moe points and fetishes. Overall it’s of fair quality, her notable flaws are her hands and bunny tail. She still has a very pleasant appearance, and a few nice details here and there. The pose highlights her strong points, but may not have been the best choice for a figure of this size. For her price tag of 12,000¥ you’re paying for her scale not her production value. If she was of a more standard 1/7 or 1/8 scale for her quality I’d price her around the low 5,000¥ range. If you’re a fan of large scale figures, Kanokon, or bunny girls it’s not a terrible buy – but outside of her impressive scale she’s far from being the jewel of any collection.
